The term “masking” often referred to isolating the specific objects from an image using the ‘Erase’ or ‘Extract’ tools. Although there are some plugins available in Adobe Photoshop to make the masking easier, isolating specific objects from a photo can be very time consuming and exhausting too. We, the Clipping Path Family, usually isolate objects from images using a clipping path. But if needed, we also create and use an alpha channel or masks too!

Actually there are two basic differences between isolating image objects using so called ‘image masking’ and using our preferable clipping path. The very first difference between these two is masking removes the pixel whereas clipping path is vector based. The second difference is isolating objects from an image using masking allows transparency on that object whereas isolating images using clipping path often lag behind. This feature of masking is often helpful when an image has objects like grass or hair.

Using Clipping Mask:

Masking technique is recommended to use for isolating images when it is difficult to identify which is part of photo background and which is subject of photo. With masking, it is possible to remove the background based on the actual pixel present, making some part of the photo transparent. That’s why a glass remains a glass even if one places it on a totally different background.

Using Alpha Channel:

Like masking, Alpha channel can also be used for isolating images. Alpha channel method is also pixel based as like clipping mask method, but here the using technique is different. When isolating images using alpha channel, one needs to create an additional channel in order to capture the shape of the specific object instead of colour. This alpha channel method is also used to isolate an image with a lot of detail. As like clipping path method, this alpha channel can be selected in Quark, Photoshop or Indesign.

Can Clipping Path Family Create a Clipping Mask or an Alpha Channel:

We mainly isolate images from their background using clipping path. But if needed and advisable, we also create a clipping mask or an alpha channel for isolating objects. Most importantly, we let our honorable clients decide which technique they would like Clipping Path Family to use.

Image masking is the most powerful, yet most misunderstood feature in Photoshop. Especially, masking seems difficult to understand for the novice. If applied in the right way, masks can create very effectual visual effects. From stylizing texts to blending images, there are thousands of uses of masking in Photoshop.

Understanding Photoshop Mask

A mask is a virtual entity that controls the behavior of pixels on images. In general, image masking controls centers around the relative opacity or transparency of a given group of layer or single layer. Whenever masks are “ON” i.e. active, a pixel gets transparency. And whenever masks are “OFF” i.e. inactive, a pixel retains its opacity. Moreover, masks can be either inactive or active to varying degrees and allow a wide range of transparency.

In Photoshop, there are basically two types of masks – layer masks and clipping masks. You will get confused to find that theoretically these masks are fairly similar but greatly different in application.

Understanding Layer mask

Layer mask is nothing but one-to-one masking technique, where a single mask is applied in a single layer. Layer masks can be replicated, and those copies can be applied to other layers. But still each layer has its own mask. Layer mask is one type of alpha mask and it is named as layer mask as it is attached to any specific layer.

Layer Masking

Layer mask also exists strictly as a mask, and don’t serve any other explicit purpose. It is only the way to control opacity and transparency of a single layer. It can hardly do anything beyond that.

Layer masks are applied to a given layer in order to control its transparency. Where layer opacity changes the transparency of an entire layer simultaneously, a mask allows you to control more precisely over very specific area. For instance, if you fix the entire layer at 30%, your layer would be at lower opacity. Again, if you want only the right side of your layer to be 30%, you have to use a mask.

Understanding Clipping Mask

Clipping Mask, in contrary, is a completely different short of entity. Where the layer mask functions as a one-to-one entity, clipping mask performs more as one-to-many entity. Clearly, it can actually affect multiple layers at once. Clipping mask is also multi-purposed. While layer mask is only a modification of a layer, clipping mask is a layer that can interacts with more layers directly above it.

Clipping Masking

One specialty of clipping mask is that, it confines the impact of an effect only to the intended layer, rather than to every layer below that particular layer. You can clip a base layer using clipping mask and while applying clipping mask, only that clipped layer is affected. All other layers are kept untouched.

Image masking is a process of masking an image over a background where two bitmaps are used and the value of Background Bitmap is kept in 0. This should be precisely done in order to get the right image masking. This whole process requires attention of the graphic designer and perfect uses of Photoshop tools. But, while people want to do image masking with Magic Wand Tool; it doesn’t become as professional as what the buyer usually wants.

You somehow get to go with Photoshop Color Tolerance setting, which is irritating, and time consuming.

If you intend to use the images produced and masked by Magic Wand Tool in any of your Web Development or App Development project; it will creates problem.

Ragged edges and unwanted connected parts issues where you have to struggle.

When you will use Magic Wand Tool, the whole work to be done need to have more tools used like “White Airbrush” to remove the background in order to protect the shadow and the image you are working with.

We would suggest you to use Pen Tool or Layer Mask Tool with Channel to do all of your image-masking project.

In arts and engineering, the term “masking” refers to the use of shields to protect any specified area from change or to highlight changes on any other area. But here, in photographic industry, “masking” is directly linked to the enhancement of image quality.

Portrays of a scene – whatever it is image, display, film or video – don’t have the dynamic range (DR) or dynamic contrast range (ratio between the smallest and largest possible numerical values of replaceable quality e.g. signals like light) whereas human eyes inherit a high dynamic contract range looking at the same scene directly. Photo masking services are specially rendered for such kinds of adjustments.

Photo masking services are mostly important for the creation of product catalogs and clipping mask is created around products having fuzzy or blurred edges that often create unsatisfactory results. Masking is implemented along with the clipping path technique to eliminate unwanted product backgrounds to showcase them in different e-commerce websites. In addition, photo masking is also applicable in complex frameworks including hair, fur, feather or foliage, semi transparent, transparent or translucent objects like muslin or chiffon, smoke, glass, flame, lighting and so on. The photo masking services add you a great advantage of representing advertised products in a professional manner and avail you with delivering outstanding output to clients who expect no less than perfect.

Photo masking services cover categories like:

Human images (specially model’s) in soaring and waving hair

Wild life images having raising fur and flying hair (e.g. dashing horses, lions etc.)

Transparent, semi transparent and translucent items (e.g. glass, smoke, highlights etc.)

Fine edged objects (e.g. jewelries or ornaments, fashion items etc.)

Natural landscapes (e.g. foliage, flower, feather or rustling edges etc.)

Masks are default in most of the photo editing software providing you with varying protection level. These allow you to make decorative or rustling edges, translucent effects, mild fades and thus grant your photographs take all possible new looks.
