Actually there are two basic differences between isolating image objects using so called ‘image masking’ and using our preferable clipping path. The very first difference between these two is masking removes the pixel whereas clipping path is vector based. The second difference is isolating objects from an image using masking allows transparency on that object whereas isolating images using clipping path often lag behind. This feature of masking is often helpful when an image has objects like grass or hair.

Using Clipping Mask:

Masking technique is recommended to use for isolating images when it is difficult to identify which is part of photo background and which is subject of photo. With masking, it is possible to remove the background based on the actual pixel present, making some part of the photo transparent. That’s why a glass remains a glass even if one places it on a totally different background.

Using Alpha Channel:

Like masking, Alpha channel can also be used for isolating images. Alpha channel method is also pixel based as like clipping mask method, but here the using technique is different. When isolating images using alpha channel, one needs to create an additional channel in order to capture the shape of the specific object instead of colour. This alpha channel method is also used to isolate an image with a lot of detail. As like clipping path method, this alpha channel can be selected in Quark, Photoshop or Indesign.

Can Clipping Path Family Create a Clipping Mask or an Alpha Channel:

We mainly isolate images from their background using clipping path. But if needed and advisable, we also create a clipping mask or an alpha channel for isolating objects. Most importantly, we let our honorable clients decide which technique they would like Clipping Path Family to use.

As I said before, if you have two images- one is with clipping path and another one is without clipping path, you can transfer the path with lesser effort. For this, you at first have to open both images next to each other in Photoshop and then drag the clipping path from the path window to the image which is without clipping path. At this, the clipping path will be copied and placed on that image without clipping path. Now if you pay a closer look, you will see that though that clipping path has been transferred to the next image, the path is still inactive. To activate that path, you need to go to “Option” in the path window which is at the right top of your screen and then select “Clipping Path”. And finally your newly created path is now live!

Usually, the clipping path’s location is identical to its original image. But if your two images size, with and without clipping path, aren’t exactly the same, the clipping path won’t be 100% accurate in place. But you don’t have to worry, because this can be easily fixed by moving the clipping path. In order to move the path, you have to select that path and then select all anchor points using the ‘white selection tool’ which is located at the toolbar. After selecting all the anchor points, you can control the path’s position with the arrow keys of your keyboard. You can also control the size of the path with [CMD][T] and then pulling the corner by pressing the [Shift] key to maintain the path size.

How to Draw Clipping Path:

• In order to create a path, you at first have to open the Path Window. In case you are a beginner user and don’t find the Path Window, go to the “Windows” menu at the top bar of your Photoshop and select “Path”
• Then choose “New Path” option from the top right of your chosen Path Window.
• Now select the Pen Tool from the Photoshop toolbar.
• At this stage, you have to start the path from several pixels inside by zooming in to the image object and then click.
• Now place another anchor point inside the image object to create a line. The line can be shaped like curve simply by holding the mouse button pulling the anchor point. In case you want to create a straight cornet at the anchor point, just hold the ALT button from your keyboard after placing the anchor point.
• And the path is completed. To create another path, repeat the same process from the beginning.

Converting a Clipping Path into a Layer Mask:

If you want to convert a clipping path into a layer mask and follow the given instructions:

• Go to the “Path Window” and choose the “Path to Selection” option from the bottom of the window
• Then you have to expand the selection by two pixels. For this, choose “Select” from the top bar and click on “Modify” and then “Expand”
• At this final stage, select the correct layer and choose the “Selection to layer mask” option at the bottom of the window.

In this post, I am going to share some really effective tips which will ensure safekeeping of your valuable artifacts for years. All these photo preservation tips work great in protecting both digital and printing images. Here we go:

You must always make sure that all your photographs have been stored in a suitable place. Your storage place must be dark, cool and dry with an average temperature of around 65 degree Fahrenheit. You should also consider humidity of that place which must be between 30%-40%. Never think about storing your favourite photographs in the basements and attics where environment isn’t usually temperature controlled. Frequent changes in environment of storage place causes the emulsion of photos to buckle and crack and the colours too fade or shift. In addition, you must also keep your photographs from getting exposure to direct sunlight.

We most often use tape to fix torn photographs, which I think one of the major reasons of damaging photos. In my opinion, leaving the tear unmended is better than using tape to fix torn. It would be really great to keep the damaged photographs in a polyethylene envelop to prevent further damage.

Besides, some people have the tendency of writing the detail of photograph on its back. Yeah, it’s really great in identifying and memorizing the persons of a photo as well as its date and location, but this kind of practice often damage photographs. If anyone still wants to write on the photos back, my suggestion is to use a number 2 pencil instead of ink pen and must write only in the margin. Besides, one should always be careful about not pushing the pencil too hard while writing in the back side.

We usually use various types of photo albums to keep photos in it. But problem is that we always choose albums based on their cuteness, not by their appropriateness and that is why photographs often get damaged even after keeping in photo albums. That’s the reason why choosing a suitable photo album is really essential for protecting photographs for years. One must avoid those photo albums which require adhesives to keep photos in place. Better is to use photo albums which hold photographs on a polyethylene page as they will protect the photos for years to come.
